Where the Red Fern Grows sounds really familiar, but I can't place the storyline. What's it about, and what happens to make it so sad?

Bout a boy who raises a couple of bloodhounds for hunting coon. One of the dogs dies after saving the boy from a mountain lion, then the other dies shortly after. A couple of red ferns grow where the boy buried the dogs. Thats a crappy review of an incredible story. If you have not seen it, do so!!!
