So, kind of tying in with the Scary Movie thread, I was wondering if anyone knows of any good scary books or horror novels. Not just the cheap thrill kind...I want nightmare material. And on that note, what are some good scary stories? I haven't heard any in a while.

well my favorite horror novelist is Clive Barker, his short story "the Midnight Meat train" is cool,as is the the novel "the Damnation Game" His short stories tend to be more in the horror vein whereas his novels are more fantasy based.Another excellent horror writer is HP Lovecraft,I'd recommend "the call of Cthulhu" "the lurker at the threshold" and "dagon"

Clive Barker has written some good ones. Or you could be geeky and read some Lovecraft.

The most horrifying book I think I've read was not a horror novel at all, but a war novel. Johnny Got His Gun, by Dalton Trumbo.

So I am back to looking for scary stories. I have been a big fan of Lovecraft for the past few years but I am looking for something a little different. I am actually wondering if any of those old horror novels from the Victorian era might be worth reading.
I want something that is more psychologically creepy than gross-out scary and I want it to be well written, but not to the point of it being convoluted.
So, if such things actually exist, I would love some recommendations!
