Since I have redone the board and none of our original members appear to be returning, I am thinking of marketing The Treatment in a different way. Instead of just general discussion of a lot of topics, I am thinking of eliminating everything but sports, music, and movies. That means getting rid of the books, oddities, and astronomy board.
I realize that those boards are probably too specific to attract members on their own but when they were still active, I really enjoyed the conversation there. I also was thinking that maybe we could get a few members who were really into astronomy and might join just for that...but that has never actually happened.
So, my new plan for the forum is to have 3 main categories (called the forum names on the main page). Each category will then have a few boards beneath it for more specific discussion. So the current sub-boards would become main boards. So the sports category would have boards for, say, football, baseball, fantasy football, college hockey, etc. And those boards would all be listed on the main page.
The only problem with this is that I would have to move all the threads in the current movie, music, and sports forums to their own board. Not only is that kind of a lot of tedious work, but some of the threads might be hard to classify considering we will no longer have general music, movie, or sports boards.
The big benefit of this (I think) is that when guests visit The Treatment, all the board topics would be visible to them, meaning they would have a better idea of what we offer. Also, our targeted demographics would be much more specific, which I think would make advertizing somewhat easier.
Ultimately, we could probably attract a lot of members if we had a really specific board, like just Fantasy Football, or just hip-hop music, but I really don't want to do that. I don't think I could converse about only one subject for very long.
So this might be a good idea. Or it might not. Let me know what you think. I want to make The Treatment as appealing and active as possible so I'm trying to figure out flaws that would be obvious and off-putting to a guest. Also, feel free to list what you think might be any other immediate weaknesses with the site.
